Adrenal Gland DIsease, Adrenal Tumors
This is the most common disease in ferrets.
Causes are suspected to be overabundance of light, inbreeding, and/or early
sterilization. Symptoms are
hair loss, enlarged vulva (in females) and enlarged prostate (in males).
Treatments include surgery, Lupron and melatonin. The most important
preventative measure you can take is to make sure your ferrets have a period of
10 to 12 hours of darkness each night. Extended periods of light will
cause overproduction of hormones in the adrenal glands. For more information, see:
