Ear Cleaning
It is important to frequently clean a
ferret's ears to prevent it from contracting ear mites (the same pests that infect
cats and dogs). Ear mites can cause deafness. Also, wax buildup in
the ears can add to a ferret's body odor.
Use
ferret ear wash or mineral oil on a cotton swab and gently clean the inside of
the ear. Don't go too deep. Get your vet to show you the proper way
to clean a ferret's ears.
This task is easier to
accomplish with two people. While one person holds or scruffs the
ferret, the other person can pull back the ear lobe and scoop wax out with a
cotton swab. Dab the swab in mineral oil or commerically available
ferret ear wash before swabbing. Most of the wax collects in the back part of the lobe --
don't swab deeply in the front of the ear where the ear canal begins or you
may cause injury to the eardrum.
Although easier with two people, with practice, one person can do this.
You may want to warm the bottle of ear
rinse a little bit first so that the liquid is not too cold when going in
their ears.
