Do I really need a cage for my ferret?

Dear FerretLady:

Hi, I've been reading up on anything and everything to do with ferrets. So in case I buy one I'll know somewhat what I'm doing. But I have one question, is it possible to not even buy a cage for a ferret and just keep them in my room? I know how they can get into places that I wouldn't think they could, but is a cage nescessary?

Amanda

Dear Amanda:

A cage is not necessary but I recommend it for the following reasons:

  • Ferrets like to burrow into piles of clothes where they can be hidden from you, then you could easily step on them and crush them. Or you might get up in the middle of the night and step on them in the dark.

  • If the ferret is always running loose in your room, there is always a chance he or she could get past you and slip out the door, perhaps get lost in the rest of the house or even get outside.

  • If you ever leave the window open, the ferret could get up on the sill and fall out the window. Even if you have a screen, he could scratch holes in the screen. One of my ferrets did that and I almost lost her!

  • There may be a small hole in a wall somewhere that he could squiggle into and then you might have a tough time getting him out.

  • If your ferret doesn't have a cage where you can hang a water bottle, then you would have to provide a water bowl. Ferrets love to tip water bowls over and make a mess!

  • I recommend you get a cage that can be your ferret's own personal little home. But definitely take your ferret out at least once or twice a day and let him (or her) run around your room for an hour or two while you play with him. They love to play with people and run around a room freely. As long as you are there to supervise, you can make sure he doesn't climb up on anything and fall down and hurt himself. You can watch him and make sure he doesn't escape your room or fall out a window or climb into a hole in a wall.

Ferrets are a lot of fun so they will want to spend lots of time with you playing in your room. But safety should be your first concern.

    Good luck!
