Dear FerretLady:
Hi, I have two ferrets and would like to know if I should
keep their food bowl filled at all times or if I should only fill it once a day.
Thank you,
Cyndi
Dear Cyndi:
I keep the food bowls for my ferrets filled all the time.
Ferrets sleep for 14 hours a day (at least!) and when they wake up, they usually
want to do two things right away - relieve themselves and then eat. I never know
when they are going to wake up, and I might not be home when they do, so I leave
the food out in bowls in their cage all the time. When the bowl gets low, I fill
it up again. I would say that I have to refill the bowl about once every couple
of days (that's for 3 ferrets).
I always let them out to run around for about an hour each day - sometimes they
are napping when I get home to let them out, but it's better to wake them up and
make sure they get out and get some exercise.
Also, always keep their water bottles full with fresh water. I use bottles
rather than a bowl - they can get the water in a bowl messy in no time! Water in
a bowl is fine for playtime when they are out and exercising (they like to
splash around in it with their front paws) but in the cage, they have only the
bottles.
Best of luck!
