Ferret Permits
New Jersey

In New Jersey, it is legal to keep ferrets as pets, but they are considered "exotics" (along with many types of birds and reptiles), and permits are required.

Currently, there is as $10 per year fee for the permit.  This fee applies to however many ferrets you own.  Whether you have one ferret or a dozen, the fee is still only $10 per year.

If you buy your ferret from a pet store, they will give you a form that you can fill out and mail in.  If you adopt your ferret from an individual, see the website addresses below for information and the form.

Information and forms can be obtained from the pages listed below on the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife website.

List of species requiring permits in New Jersey:

List of permit application forms:

On the Forms webpage, in the "Other" category, click on the link:
"Exotic and Nongame Wildlife Species Possession Permit Application (Hobby Permit)"

The form itself is a PDF (portable document format) file.  Most web browsers already have the Adobe Acrobat Reader plug-in, so you should be able to see and print the form.  When you click on the link to open the PDF file, if you cannot view the form, go to the Adobe website and get the free download of the Acrobat Reader.  www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Note: Permit information is subject to change.  FLNJ accepts no responsibility for changes to permits and licenses.  Always check with your local and state authorities for up-to-date information.
